On March 31, Mrs. Borcherding, the New Haven art teacher, submitted 37 works of art made by New Haven students to the ECC Art Gallery. The competition was held at ECC, where the show is open April 3-12. Out of the 40 ribbons that people were competing for, 11 ribbons were given to the students of New Haven. According to Mrs. Borcherding, it’s a great show, and the students in the conference are really talented. There is a reception on Wednesday, April 12, if people still want to see the artwork created by our students and others in the Four Rivers Conference. She stated, “I think it was our best work yet. I was really proud to unwrap the artwork that I'd selected. It was awesome stuff.” Mrs. Borcherding was asked how long she had been doing this, and she replied with, “This is my 12th year here at NHHS and we've entered every year. The art show has been going on long before I started teaching though. I remember entering a painting when I was in high school.” Emily Knoppe, who was a first place winner in the painting category, said, “I was surprised because I didn’t know how many schools entered and I haven’t been painting for a while. I made it because I really like pastel colors and flowers I wanted to involve them.” Devin Buchheit was another first place winner but in the prints category. When asked how he felt when he found out that his artwork won first place, he said, “I just figured it's representing America, the people at the top, greedy and rich, and the people at the bottom trying to get to the top but always getting cut by that double-edge sword.” Celesse Smedley won second place in the digital art category. She was asked what inspired her to do the piece, and her response was, “Party at Tiffany's is a very in-depth piece of art. Whenever I started creating it, it had a deeper meaning than just a party. It was a reflection of myself and society. On the left side, it is black and white, while on the right, it is a burst of color. The masks in the trees represent different masks we put on towards other people. You can see there's an angel and a 'devil' in the piece, which is obviously the good and bad side of things. There's a series of bats and butterflies that even more justifies that theory.” Congratulations to those who placed or earned honorable mention, and to those who submitted art pieces. Also, a thank you to Mrs. Borcherding for helping the students with their artwork and for submitting it. Here are other place-winners in the Four Rivers Conference Art Competition:

Friday, March 31, 2017, the 4th grade ended with a 2nd place finish after a night consisting of 4 games. The Shamrocks first played the Union Wildcats and lost 2-0. This followed with a win against the St. Clair Bulldogs, as they beat them 2-0. The Shamrocks proceeded to beat the Owensville Dutchgirls 2-0, leading them to the championship game. Finally, they took Union again to 3 sets, but came up short, losing 1-2. This is the first time that the Rocks have gotten a 2nd place finish this year, as the past 2 tournaments resulted in 3rd place finishes. They now have a chance to keep improving and bring home a 1st place medal, as their last tournament in Union approaches. Junior Emily Scheer proclaimed, “This was the first time that I watched the girls play this year, and I would say that they played pretty good. Especially since they played for first.” Head Coach Trisha Fleer later pronounced, “The girls were excited to play a tournament on their home court. They played with enthusiasm and hoped to bring home their 3rd medal this season, which they ended up doing.” She continued with, “The girls did a great job serving, communicating, and importantly having fun. They couldn’t quite pull off the 1st place finish, but did bring home a 2nd place medal to be proud of.” Their last tournament took place Friday, the 7th, at 5 P.M. at Union High School.

New Haven High School will be hosting the Class 2 District 9 Scholar Bowl tournament on Saturday, April 8. After placing second last year, New Haven is hoping to capitalize on the experience of their seniors in the district tournament for the first time since 2014. In the past two years, the tournament has coincided with the first day of Senior Trip, but that won’t be the case this year.
Bob Pruessner, Brady Kruse, and Riley Otten are New Haven’s three top scorers and most experienced players, each with four years on the team. Other seniors include Julianna Parsons and Thomas Ley. Juniors Dalton Gerdes and Kalli Stubblefield round out the rest of the team. The team is coached by Jared Pruessner. After finishing with a record of 26-23 in the regular season and 5-1 in the Four Rivers Conference, New Haven will face several of the same teams from last year’s district tournament. Belle, who has won the tournament the past two years, returns along with Crystal City, Linn, and Kingston. Steelville is new to the district tournament this year. Preliminary rounds will be played at 9:00, 10:00, and 11:00 a.m. Following a break for lunch, the top four teams will advance to the semifinals at 1:00 p.m. The championship game is scheduled to be played at 2:00 in the high school band room. Other games will be played in the art room and library. All are welcome to attend. There is no charge for admission. On Wednesday, March 22, I interviewed Dan Terry-- a New Haven police officer who also ghost-hunts in his free time. I asked him a series of questions about his ghost-hunting experiences and his spooky investigations. Here is our conversation: Q: Why do people call you Spookstalker Dan? A: “I took the name Spookstalker in homage to the TV show that started me down this path. It was on television back in 1973 through 1975. It was about a reporter that kept getting involved in ghosts, zombies, werewolves, and etc. The name of the show was Kolchak: The Night Stalker. Since I was only looking for ghosts at the time, and there was another group in Tennessee called Night Stalkers, I took on Spookstalker. A man who lived in a demon infested house in Union, Mo., who was also a radio host, began calling me Spookstalker Dan. It just kind of stuck.” Q: What does the term “ghost hunter” mean to you? A: “The term Ghost Hunter specifically refers to people searching for proof of an intelligent afterlife. Religion is fine, and we are supposed to believe without proof. However, they don’t answer all of the questions that arise when you live in a haunted place or have had experiences with the dead. I am looking to make actual contact with the dead, and attempt to gain actual evidence of intelligent life after death.” “There are some who attempt to help a spirit to move on, or leave the location. My entire focus is on trying to discover if a place is haunted, why it is haunted, and who is haunting it as well as why they are in that particular place.”
